Martin Geddes is (again) taking the bull by the horns.

And an interesting and informative process it may well turn out to be.

Removing one's name from the electoral register sounds simple enough, so why shouldn't one?

Now it is true that the register is used for a number of purposes other than the electoral system, but those purposes are not necessarily our problem.

And whereas a sudden influx of deregistration requests might cause the authorities some unease, it would leave the electoral field open to the established incumbent powers, so some may feel that it isn't the right approach. Still, the somewhat cynical counter-argument - that voting doesn't make a lot of difference whomsoever we vote for - does have force these days. 

If enough people were to deregister, it would amount to a scathing vote of no confidence in the system and we wouldn't even need to wait

The war front has been, perhaps surprisingly, relatively static, but that doesn't mean that nothing has been going on.

The Russians have no interest in incurring unnecessary casualties, and seem to be fighting the Ukrainians into the ground using superior firepower from a distance, a war of attrition. Once the Ukrainians run out of western supplies, the Russians will be able to move with relative impunity. The big question is how long that will take.

So the UN's IPCC is stepping out into the fray once more, stating that:

"An 80% global reduction in CO₂ emissions is needed to limit warming to 1.5°C", 

and quick off the mark, our doughty civil servants have

"modelled a way to reach the target by 2042" including a "50% reduction in meat and dairy consumption, a 15% cut in air passenger levels compared with pre-pandemic levels, and the widespread acceptance of heat pumps in homes"

not to mention the ever popular Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, insect-burgers, and fluoridation schemes to keep us all owning nothing and happy as Larry.

And of course no mention that as the UK's emissions are already insignificant compared with the ever-growing emissions of India and China (to name but two), the whole exercise is completely pointless even on its own terms.

More follow-on in the wake of the Hancock WhatsApps is provided by Alex Starling, writing in the Daily Sceptic, who rightly identifies Hancock as a low-level player whose role was simply to do as he was told, not ask any difficult questions, and (one suspects) be rewarded by making quite a few essentially illegal bucks on the side via dubious procurement contracts.

I find his analysis persuasive, and note with some satisfaction that he does indeed go beyond the simplistic but unsatisfactory notion of "incompetence" and asks the serious question: "Who was the organ-grinder" that issued Matt (directly or indirectly) his instructions?

We made a brief comment previously on the Sunak Northern Ireland Protocol agreement (the "WIndsor" agreement) but now we have a rather ore complete assessment of what it means, courtesy of Global Britain. No, it isn't good news for our future independence, but is that what you were expecting?

Teenagers have always had a problem with society's expectations of their interactions with the opposite sex. So it's no surprise if that tradition still lingers, although perhaps it is a disappointment that expectations seem to have become more extreme, perhaps in particular for white indigenous Brits.

Many people are aware that banks cannot survive a bank run - an event where too many customers decide that they want their money out please. If the bank doesn't have enough cash-in-hand to pay them then they can only close their doors, making the problem obvious to everybody. Trust in that bank implodes and then everybody wants their cash out.

The question of course is - what is it that prompts the original few to start withdrawing their money and kicking off the process? A mere rumour may be enough.

Another means by which a bank may be caught short is the "complex financial instrument" (good wording: "complex" implies that it's way beyond our simple minds to understand, so please leave it to the experts) - otherwise called a "derivative" - an agreement that in theory will hedge your risk against some unforeseen event that would otherwise cost you a great deal of money. Banks make good money selling this form of insurance whilst such events do not occur, and so with blithe insouciance create an
