Apparently, Rachel Reeves has already set up a UK equivalent, the OVfM (Office for value for money).

I'm sure that we are all agog to know more about its amazing successes in closing down all the unnecessary and frankly illegal scams that suck the financial blood out of our taxes, and indeed the Daily Sceptic is I'm sure eager to inform us, so the first project appears to be a leisurely appraisal of ways in which to reduce the costs of procuring short term accommodation, for homeless Brits and asylum seekers.

Now you could excitedly go and read all about it, but there's really no need, because (spoiler alert) the one policy that really might have an impact on the expense to government in providing all this short term accommodation - the reversal of the government policies that cause the influx of new arrivals in the first place -  is somehow nowhere to be found ...

Still, I'm sure that those who staff the new department will consider that the extra expense for the taxpayer that will keep then in the style to which they are accustomed will be worthwhile, as it will all add to the reported GDP figures to show how well the economy is doing on their watch.

We have TCW Daily to thank for today's bon mot, although what is bon about it is for us all to decide.

Now that we have "left the EU" to pursue our own national interests, it may surprise nobody that our shiny new prime minister is busy signing us up to all the individual aspects of EU membership - especially Defence - although somehow none of this has attracted any attention from the media, or indeed from anyone else. No doubt we will shoulder the real costs in return for its fabled benefits in due course.

Maybe the the desperate need to deny the ever reliable Mr Putin any semblance of rationality or good faith (although it seems to me that he usually does do what he said he was going to do, a trait that our own politicians might care to emulate) has clouded their judgement. Or maybe after so many years of EU membership they still can't grasp that the UK might get a better life by making our own arrangements outside their clammy bureaucracy.

Perhaps they have simply forgotten how to do independent nationhood.

Still, "something must be done", so they are doing it.

"rages" is probably not the right term for war that is low-key, relying on largely imperceptible propaganda censorship deception cunning and the manipulation of information delivered, rather than physical assault and explosions, but it can be no less devastating in impact on those engaged.

That propaganda censorship deception manipulation and cunning have been the bread and butter of probably all past conflicts is now well understood, so perhaps 5GW is merely the next logical advancement in the Art of War. Tsun Tzu would be proud.

Nevertheless it is a truism that when 5GW falls short, open physical warfare is likely to break out when those who have not achieved their goals take to kinetic warfare to get what they want.
