Freedom, but only to agree with your Lords and Masters.
That model has been carefully cultivated in the EU, whose ruling council the European Council (not to be confused with the Council of Europe) sits at the top of the EU's public pyramid of power, way above the Commission, and far above the Parliament which is more or less at the very bottom (although still above the EU's voters).
It's the freedom to do as you are told and to like it. Nevertheless, the Poles and East Germans and no doubt others still remember living under the similar leadership of the USSR, and have no intention to permit their political clocks to be rewound that far back.
So now we have waves of unrest reported across the continent from France (and to a lesser extent Spain) in the West to Poland in the East, and an EU leadership that struggles to contain their populations' differences with that leadership.
