If ever there was a fake democracy with an essentially toothless "Parliament", it is surely the EU.
No doubt however that after the war, national parliaments in European countries were not masters of their own affairs. How could it have been otherwise?
Yet Germany's "economic miracle" was won in defiance of the occupying power, reportedly single-handedly by a non-compliant critical thinker, Ludwig Erhard, who in defiance of the order to not change the post-war system of price controls is reputed to have responded "But I didn't change them, I abolished them". The rest was history.
Compare with the Germany of today that threw out all its power stations traditional and nuclear in favour of windmills and solar, the so-called "renewables". Yes they are renewable. but no they are neither reliable nor economical nor recyclable. German industry has shuttered more factories than ever (including once-mighty Volkswagen) as a result, and their government is now looking for a war with Russia to restart its economy by ... making munitions ...
Yes, war was what destroyed Germany in the first place.
Icelanders at any rate have more sense.
