Our first responsibility is to look after ourselves, to stay healthy.
Whereas in rare circumstances that rule might be broken, in general it holds. If we don't look after ourselves, we may end up in no position to look after others, and become a burden on others.
This was embedded in military NBC (nuclear chemical biological) training - we were ordered to put on our own gas-masks before helping anybody else. Obvious really, but sometimes the obvious needs stating ...
As it is for individuals, so it is for nations.
