Speaking personally, I would suggest that as God (or Nature, take your pick) has endowed us with the most incredible "grey matter" between our ears - it is the height of ingratitude and folly not to use it to its full extent and purpose, and that purpose is for us to determine.

As human beings we grow in power confidence and wisdom by pursuing our goals and overcoming the obstacles.
We all have our own minds, to use ignore or abuse as we choose. Ultimately, this is simply to state the obvious. Despite the prevalence of egregious levels of propaganda swilling around the world today, nobody else can control our thoughts unless we allow them.
This (somewhat outdated) Guardian article paints transhumanism in a benevolent light where body parts can be replaced by "superior" artificial substitutes and even the brain may be "augmented" by AI (anybody know what AI actually is?).
What we do know is that scientific and engineering advances can be used for both good or ill. If the brain can be augmented, then I suggest that sooner or later, someone will probably find a way to harness it under AI control, thus degrading us into servants to whatever scheme the masters behind the AI wish to introduce.
We also know that 'they' have been working on communicating messages embedded in audio and images straight into our subconscious for years. And today, the Internet of Things beckons?
Will "augmentation" eventually override our own thoughts, and substitute 'their' goals for ours?
Now that would be slavery indeed, and it would certainly come as little surprise were we to find that someone has already been working on it.

For now, we can each choose our own stairway.
Will it be the descending stairway that purports to lead to fulfilment of our own personal desires even at the expense of others - riches, fast cars, loose women, power over others, etc etc - 'success' at any cost? This is the win-lose stairway. Inevitably, being win-lose, it leads to bad and broken relationships, even criminality and a life fearful of being caught and shamed. In reality, it is the lose-lose stairway.
Will it be the 'go with the flow' stairway, where we automatically follow the herd for fear of having to justify any contrary behaviour? This is no stairway at all, more like a travellator that goes wherever the installers wished. It may be an "easy" option, but do you know who installed it and whither it leads? The travellator demands that you give up your independence of thought and although your successes will not be your own, your failures will still be yours because you had the opportunity to choose and you blew it.
Or will it be the stairway that climbs upwards to the betterment of humanity as a whole: to be of service to others, to promote the best for society through achieving the best for all the free-thinking individual members of society, to promote the incoming tide that floats all boats? This is the win-win stairway, and you can guess where it leads ...
