This must qualify as one of the most infamous (or famous, according to your point of view) assertions of all time. It shouldn't matter in all truth because at one time in history I'm sure we could have identified the received consensus that 97% of all scientists agreed that the sun orbits the earth, or that the earth is flat, or that man landed on the moon (and came back again) in the 1960s, or that the twin towers (plus building 7, 3 buildings in all) were brought down by suicidal Arab terrorist trainee pilots flying only 2 aircraft, and we still haven't nailed those issues completely either.

Meanwhile, life goes on regardless.

Or would do if the politicians were not involved.

Copernicus in 1543 published his revolutionary idea that the earth orbits the sun, but as they didn't have the internet in those days it was Gallileo who caught the full wrath of the rich and powerful of the day (ie: the "Holy Father") who didn't like being contradicted one bit.

That man never did actually make it to the moon and back is a now "well debunked" conspiracy theory (as all counter-official-narratives must now be labelled) despite many free-thinkers who like to come to their own conclusions based upon evidence and logic.

And that two planes wouldn't bring down one steel-framed tower (let alone three!) is undoubtedly in the official mind a completely unfounded conspiracy theory that no rational engineer could conceivably believe.

About all of the above we might continue in happy ignorance of the truth, but about the Climate Change narrative we cannot, due to the simple fact that our global ruling elites have taken into their heads that we must all stop burning fossil fuels because the CO2 emissions are going to cook the planet.

Even that might not matter if we had viable alternative power sources - but we don't, and our entire modern way of living - literally "living" as in "remaining alive" - relies on the availability of power. Power to transport people goods food and drink, power to run our lighting communications heating and cooling, power to run our factories offices and public utilities, power to mine the minerals and till our farmer's fields, the list goes on.

The sun only shines half the time (and cloudy days do not help) and the wind (as has been recently demonstrated) may not blow for days on end - and guess what - you can't make wind turbines without coal to make the steel, and it seems that once at end of life the turbines can't be recycled. And much else besides, including the paucity of effective electrical storage techniques.

So it turns out that the assertion that 97% of climate scientists agree that climate change will cook the earth is an important assertion that we need to take seriously - even though it is made by politicians with zero track record of making successful predictions about the climate.
