We are all familiar with the first spike of the pandemic in March / April 2020, when many people in care institutions died, supposedly because they were infected by Covid as people were discharged from the NHS to release beds.

Now it is reported that this may not have been the full story.

"In 2016 the NHS drew up plans to withdraw hospital care for nursing home residents in the event of a pandemic"

Any article starting with the exhortation "Imagine you're a normal person" may not be being written from a shared viewpoint, but whatever your view of current and recent circumstances, perhaps we can agree that we are not living through times that we would, two years ago (yes, that long), have considered "normal".

This megathread takes the trouble to look at recent turmoils from a historical perspective (don't worry - only five years or so) to identify the factors that may have caused our everyday presumptions to be shifted from their previous comfortable moorings.

Whilst restrictions in the UK have been reduced recently, the story in other countries is less rosy. 

Dave Cullen of Computing Forever tells it how he sees it, from the Irish / EU perspective.

Whilst SAGE has been making back-peddling noises in recent weeks, elsewhere the Covid passports are being ramped up.

The Daily Sceptic gives voice to the many who now want to know what our government is still waiting for before declaring the pandemic closed.

As they remark, 

"But why isn’t it over? Now that we have developed our vaccines and delivered them to the vulnerable, reducing (we hope) their risk of death, what more are we waiting for? What now is to be gained from perpetuating the state of emergency? What  turned this "middle class Mum" into an "anarchist"?

I suppose we might quibble with the word "anarchist". It implies accepting a level of violence and chaos in order to overthrow the status quo, but that seems not to fairly represent where she is now. Of course, nobody can predict the future.

This is a well-turned piece by a well-reasoned lady, and she struck me as very peaceful and level-headed and not at all anarchic.

I suspect she speaks for a multitude.

Today's excursion around the news outlets, so valiantly undertaken in Independence Daily by the indefatigable Viv Evans, pulls relentlessly at the various loose threads that threaten to unravel the whole casedemic.

Carefully crafted by SAGE and their accomplices in the medical establishments, the whole house of cards is in serious trouble.

The GWPF (Global Warming Policy Forum) notes the government plans for raising the costs of power in order to pay for EV charging stations.

The point about the switch from coal to oil was two-fold - convenience (oil didn't have to be shovelled) and energy density (you could go further on the same weight of oil) thus minimising the cost of carrying the stuff when used to power transport.

It's true that oil required the additional step of refining to produce a relatively clean fuel, but that cost was worth it. 

Government subsidies to persuade people to make the switch were simply not required.

Electricity has been around for a very long time, however is still tricky to store. It isn't available from wells and mines, it has to be generated at point of use, or transmitted via power lines. We do not as a rule involve ourselves in matters mundane but the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee in their recent report highlights the dangers inherent in the relationship between the Bank of England (which prints the money) and the Treasury (which spends it). 

Now this print-to-spend arrangement is not supposed to exist, but their Lordships found that it is "widely perceived" that the amount printed seems to be tracking the amount spent.
